"Umid" HSSC implemented the "Capacity Building of CBOs active in Sumgait" project within the framework of "Peace and Stability in Caucasus" (FRESTA) Program under the funding of Humanitarian Office of European Union and DRC during July' 2002 - December' 2003. Two partner NGOs, "Umid" HSSC (Azerbaijan) and UN Association (Georgia) participated in the project.

Objective 1 . To create database of Sumgait CBOs

According to the work plan of the project, discussions were conducted with the organization of NRC, International World Vision, Children Fund "Buta", "Sulh", and "Avand" in order to develop a database of CBOs performing work in Sumgait. The structural base and information to be included in the database were decided with these organizations.

The questionnaire consisted of 17 questions was elaborated for collecting the information. Questions covered the date of establishment, address, registration of community, implemented projects, the target groups, the number of community members, Community Fund, trainings received by community members etc.

2 survey teams consisted of 2 people were established. 3 volunteers were involved in conducting the survey. The members of survey team was delivered the training on "How to conduct the survey".

45 CBOs from 51 established in Sumgait were involved in the survey, the database on these CBOs was developed. 16 communities established by UMID, 24 communities by IWV, 4 by NRC, Children Fund "Buta" and Community "Logman" included in 45 CBOs. All CBOs , where the survey had been conducted were delivered the bulletin reflecting the performance of  "Umid" HSSC and newsletter reflecting the aim of this project implemented within the framework of FRESTA Program.

Objective 2 . Round Tables and Trainings

Another objective of the project was to select the most active communities that are able to work independently and involve them in Round Tables and Trainings.

8 CBOs were selected from among 45. 6 of them were established by UMID (Sema, Shafag, Yukhari Mollu and Saray of Gubadli region, Lachin region Ashagi Jijimli, Gubadli region Farjan), one of them established by NRC (Yeni Hayat) and another one established by WV International (Kimyachilar - 3). These communities were delivered trainings on 4 topics:

  • Basic information on NGOs and CBOs ;

  • Community Fund and its management;

  • Need Assessment and Project Writing;

  • Formation of NGO and its registration.

6 Round Tables were about the presentation of FRESTA Program, current situation and problems of CBOs, the Community Fund. According to recommendations given at these Round Tables, each CBO should develop a passport and map of own community, and UMID should control over this process. Certain assistance was provided to them to develop community passport, i.e. each CBO collected the statistical information about the population, conducted the survey (family members) among the population (in each family) and submitted to UMID.
