On November 12, 2024, "Umid" Support to Social Development Public Union organized a panel discussion on "Community-Based Solutions for Irrigation and Drinking Water Supply" at the National NGO Forum Pavilion, located in the Green Zone of COP29. Representatives from NGOs, experts, and community members attended the event.
The panel addressed solutions to anticipated water scarcity issues for irrigation and drinking water in various regions, including Azerbaijan. Participants discussed strategies for the efficient use of water resources, the sustainability of water sources, and methods to meet community water needs.
The discussion was opened by Umid SSD PU’s Executive Director, Israyil Isgandarov, who emphasized the importance of community-based approaches.
Sahib Mammadov, Chair of the Executive Committee of the "League for the Protection of Labor Rights of Citizens,” highlighted the significance of efficient water use and, in particular, the conservation of groundwater as key measures to mitigate water scarcity. Tukezban Aghabayeva, Chair of "EcoHUB" Public Union for Supporting Environmental Initiatives, stressed the importance of collaboration between the government, private sector, and civil society to ensure sustainable water sources and address environmental issues.
The regional team of Umid SSD PU presented insights into current water challenges and innovative solutions in Azerbaijan’s rural areas, emphasizing the importance of establishing sustainable water supply systems at the community level.
This event is seen as an important step by Umid SSD PU toward promoting community-based solutions in combating climate change.
