Community: The United States' Disregard for Our Cause Contradicts Its Commitment to Human Rights
The indifference displayed by the United States of America (US) towards our cause starkly contradicts its professed dedication to human rights. This sentiment was expressed in the statement issued by the West Azerbaijan Community.
"We have taken note of the statement made by the United States (US) Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, on September 10, 2023. In his address, he stressed the importance of any peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan safeguarding the rights and security of Karabakh's Azerbaijani residents. He also called for a dialogue between Baku and the Karabakh residents.
Regrettably, Secretary of State Blinken's statement failed to address the issue of Azerbaijanis forcibly expelled from Armenia. It is a well-documented fact that Armenia forcibly displaced all Azerbaijanis from its territory and continues to deny them the right to return to their homes. Armenia has not shown any willingness to engage in dialogue with the West Azerbaijan Community regarding this matter.
Conversely, Azerbaijan promptly facilitated the return of Armenians to the Karabakh region following the cessation of hostilities in 2020. Azerbaijan has actively pursued contact and integration efforts with Armenians residing in Karabakh. Moreover, Armenians enjoy full citizenship rights in Azerbaijani territories beyond the Karabakh region.
In light of these circumstances, the complete disregard exhibited by the United States for our cause starkly contradicts its avowed commitment to safeguarding human rights on a global scale. This raises concerns that either the United States is disinterested in the human rights of ethnic Azerbaijanis or that its concern diminishes once a population group has endured ethnic cleansing. This is a grave concern for us.
Compounded by Secretary of State Blinken's lack of response to our communication, the stance taken by the US government is deeply disappointing. We urge the US government to cease its discriminatory approach to human rights and lend support to the safe and dignified return of Azerbaijanis forcibly expelled from Armenia to their rightful homes. Additionally, we implore the US government to leverage its influence over Armenia to initiate a meaningful dialogue with our Community," the statement emphasizes.
