Support to IDPs in Azerbaijan via generating income and employment opportunities for youths and providing logistical support for vulnerable families project
The current project under financial support of UNCHR was designed to support and contribute Umid SSD’s proved experience in supporting the vulnerable IDPs in Azerbaijan via enhancing their youths income generation and employment skills and providing logistical support to the urban IDPs in Sumgait, covers 28 communities. The project aims at improving living conditions for IDPs in public buildings and old IDP settlements as well as on income and employment generation through three distinctive components, which complement each other:
1) Enhancement of income generation and employment opportunities of IDP youths via involving them into apprenticeship courses and business trainings; 2) provision of humanitarian support /action to refugees, IDPs, martyr and local vulnerable families; 3) Involvement of IDP adolescents and youth into initial computer training courses on office programs.
In accordance with the commitments planned for 6 month period, a series of meetings attended by 200 families were held with local executive structures and State Refugee Committee of Sumgait to determine IDPs and refugees resided areas to update about project goals, objectives, and implementation principles were delivered in. The trade-fields were identified according to the youths’ interests.
1. Apprenticeship- A total of 175 youth (89 men, 86 women) applied to get involved in various trade fields. Of them 146- were IDPs and 29-local people. As a result of selection, 15 youth were involved in apprenticeship courses on 4 trades: barber-3 persons, hairdresser-2-3; dressmaker-3, engine repairing-3 men. Apprenticeship course lasts for 4 months. Trainings on 3 trade fields were completed and on 2 fields are continued successfully. 9 youths graduated from apprenticeship courses generated chances to start-up their businesses; one out of them stayed at the course to work, 8 of them are providing their services at their own residences.
2. Provision of humanitarian aid: Humanitarian acts provision within the framework of the project has been continued during the first half of this year. For instance, consequence of investigation carried out in "Kimyachilar”, "Khudafarin” and "Saray” communities, 350 "Dream Parcels” donated by Japan state were presented to the 110 children aged 2-10. Highly appreciating this event, children expressed their sincere thanks to the ambassador of Japan to Azerbaijan . Following this act, free of charge barber and hairdresser services was rendered to the children representing orphan, handicapped, vulnerable and martyr families and their parents. Young hair masters decided to continue this act every year.
3.Involvement of IDP adolescents and youth into initial computer training courses and internet usage– 82 adolescents and youth from 175 densely populated IDP communities applied to computer training courses and 32 out of them were enrolled; 25 IDP youth completed computer courses and were awarded with proper certificates; 8 out of them continue their study. Enrollment to the computer and internet usage will be continued to the tenth month of this year. Additional 8 apprentices anticipated to be enrolled.
