The project Sustainable Community Development in the Northern regions of Azerbaijan to be implemented under financial support of BP Company and AIOC in 3 stages was completed.

So, the first stage covered April- July of 2003 with completion of community mobilization work in 10 communities and implementation of micro-projects. A mobilization process began in next 5 communities according to plan.

The second stage of the project covered August, 2003 - March, 2004. At this stage activities begun in the first one were continued, and the mobilization of new 17 communities was completed. 1 pilot project was implemented in each community. Besides, 50 young boys and girls from target communities were involved in apprenticeship courses.

An activity on the third stage of the project completed which had begun since April of 2004. The following activities were undertaken upon the project:

Community Development

Mobilization works were undertaken in 3 new communities - Gedimaligishlag community of Khachmaz region, Padar and Ashaghi Amirkhanli communities of Davachi region.

Taking under consideration that round tables being held in communities are of significant component for community development, within past period it was ensured that the round tables be systematically conducted in new and supported communities. April-November of 2004 saw 72 round tables to be conducted and 602 participants to attend the round tables.

At the same time within past period there were conducted 18 trainings on Community Mobilization, Conflicts solution, Sustainability and Management, Team work and leadership, Needs Assessment and proposal writing and Long-term Activity Plan of Community and number of participants represented by community members was 201.

Involvement of youth in vocational trainings by apprenticeship method

30 young boys and girls from 10 communities got apprenticeship skills on fields hairdressing and barbering, carpenter, metal craftsman, dressmaking, radio-TV repairs, auto-metal craftsman, auto-motor repairs and were awarded with certificates. Besides, they arose their awareness about business etiquette, entrepreneurship sphere and so on.

Success story

Seadan community is located on the peak of a high mountain in Siyazan region. It is very difficult to visit to this community which is at a distance of 10-12 km from the region centre.

Having a history of more than 300 years this village have been preserving its old customs and tendencies. There is a secondary school and a Mosque in the village. The Municipality is dwelling an old Finnish house, while the ExCom is in an accommodated coach .

There was no medical point in the village up today. The people are treated by natural ways, but seriously ill persons are taken to the region center. Sometimes the state of a patent not taken to the doctor in time, becomes worse.

When the first project was to be implemented in the community the majority of the population noted the necessity of the medical point in the village. At last, this desire of the population of Seadan village was realized by Umid HSSC under financial support of BP company.

The community members who heard the project be confirmed, began to work immediately. The enthusiasm, attitude of the people to the project, joy reflected on their faces proved the significance of the work being undertaken.
